Coral Gables, FL – August 30, 2023 – SYMX Infrastructure, LLC (SYMX) is proud to announce its involvement in a significant port infrastructure improvement project at Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala. The project, titled “Mejoramiento Infraestructura Portuaria Rompeolas Este y Oeste, Puerto Quetzal,” aims to enhance the port’s infrastructure to meet future demands and environmental conditions.

Project Overview

The project is based on a comprehensive climate and morphological study conducted by Empresa Portuaria Quetzal. This study determined the necessary parameters for the functional requirements of the port’s protection structures and dredging needs for the next 100 years.

Project Phases

The project will be executed in two phases:

Phase A: Mitigation of Sedimentation and Erosion

  • Dredging of 2,385,000 m³ of material from West Trench 1, West Trench 2, Access
  • Channel, and Approach Channel.
  • Laying of dredged material along the port’s coast.

Phase B: Improvement of Port Infrastructure

  • Repair of the basin side of the western breakwater.
  • Addressing unstable blocks on the crest of the west breakwater.
  • Optimization of the breakwater in excess of the North Dam.
  • Rehabilitation of the gabion structure and steel sheet pile arches of the North Dike.
  • Rehabilitation of the coastal lining to the immediate east of Puerto Quetzal.
  • Elimination of the first five breakwaters in a west-east direction and repair of the largest
    jetty number six.
  • Completion of the western San Marino breakwater according to its original design.

Project Team

The project will be executed in collaboration with Boskalis Westminster N.V. is a Dutch dredging and heavy lift maritime company that provides services relating to the construction and maintenance of maritime infrastructure internationally. The company has one of the world’s largest dredging fleets, a large stake in Smit International and owns Dockwise, a large heavylift shipping company. Also, Supervisión, Construcción y Mantenimiento, S.A. (SCM), one of the largest construction companies in Guatemala. SCM will serve as the Prime Contractor, responsible for submitting the final proposal, meeting all local requirements, and executing the project.
